Homework Data Comparison

C Side
Max: 180
Min: 15
Range: 165
Mean: 93.1
Q1: 45
Median: 90
Q3: 120
IQR: 75
MAD: 42.132
Mode: 120

B Side
Max: 180
Min: 15
Range: 165
Mean: 63.5
Q1: 45
Median: 60
Q3: 75
IQR: 30
MAD: 25.294117647059
Mode: 45

We compared how long C side spends doing homework to how long B side spends doing homework. We calculated the measure of centers and measures of variability for each side. For C side, the median is 90, mean is about 93, the IQR is 75, the MAD is around 42 and the mode is 120. For B side, the median is about 60, mean is around 63.5, the IQR is 30, the MAD is around 25 and the mode is 45. The minimum is 15 minutes for both data sets and the maximum is 180 for both data sets.

Based on the data, C side spends more time on homework than B side does. Even though the minimum and maximum are the same for each, that doesn’t show the overall amount of time for each side, just the highest and lowest amounts. Because of this, we have to use the mean. The mean for C side is 93.1, which is greater than the mean for B side: 63.5. To make sure that this isn’t because of outliers, we compared the means to the median. We did this because sometimes if there is a data point that’s really far away from the rest of the data, an outlier, it can throw off the mean. The median for C side is also greater than that of B side. The median for C side is 90, and the median for B side is 60. Because of this data, we know that on average, C side spends more time on homework than B side does.

If you just look at the range for both C side and B side, you can’t really tell how spread out the data is because the difference between the minimum and the maximum are the same. This probably means they are spread out differently because they have different medians, and different means. The IQR for C side is 75, while the IQR for B side is 30. This means that there is more variability in the middle 50% of the data for C side compared to B side.

The MAD shows on average how far away the data points are from the mean. The MADs for each data set show that the data for C side is more spread out than the data of B side. We know this because on average, the data on C side is 42.123 away from the mean, and the data for B side is on average 5.294117647059 away from the mean. Therefore, C side’s data has more variability in how long it takes to do homework.

We also found that B side’s data skews right, and had a large cluster by the median. I know this because Q1 and Q3 are very close to each other, even though they  represent 50% of the data. C side’s data is more symmetric, and there isn’t really big clusters. It’s evenly spread out.
